The Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) has developed a standardized rating system for low carbon cement and concrete to facilitate reporting, procurement, and product comparison. The system ensures transparency in the procurement of low carbon building materials and supports global efforts towards net zero emissions by 2050.

🧱 Low Carbon Cement Rating

• Unit of measurement : CO₂ equivalent integrated per tonne of cement product (ECO₂e/t).
• Classification : Seven ratings from AA to F:
  • AA : Near zero emissions cement – ​​based on GCCA’s emissions reduction pathway towards net zero target.
  • A – F : Ratings are determined based on carbon footprint values, building on the IEA low emissions definition for cement production.
• Calculation method : The manufacturer calculates the global warming potential (GWP) of the product using the EPD method and compares it with country-specific rating values.

🏗️ Low Carbon Concrete Rating

• Unit of measurement : CO₂ equivalent integrated per cubic meter of concrete (ECO₂e/m³).
• Classification : Eight ratings from AA to F, based on:
  • GWP (kg CO₂e/m³) .
  • Concrete strength (MPa) – as higher strength concrete typically requires more cement, resulting in a higher carbon footprint.
• Calculation method : The manufacturer calculates the GWP of the concrete product using the EPD method and compares it with the GCCA global rating chart.

🔧 EPD and National Adaptation Methodology

• Standard : EN 15804+A2, PCR-001 – Construction cement and lime (EN 16908).
• Database : ecoinvent.
• Scope : From raw material exploitation to factory gate (A1-A3).
• “Net GWP” : Calculation of emissions from treated waste according to ISO 21930 and EN 15804+A2.

GCCA and ESG Education & Business work with national associations to develop national adaptation ratings, aligned with local EPD practices. Manufacturers can then calculate GWP using that country’s EPD practices.
